Before heading off on holiday to Ohope with family, tent and 3G router on 4th Jan, I decided to research my options of getting good 3G broadband before leaving. I checked coverage maps, cellsites in the area etc. John Reader had also mentioned in a forum that there'd been a decent upgrade to capacity there recently. I bought a couple of VF vodems with 2G data bundles, and took my usual Telecom and 2D dongles just in case. Well, everywhere I tried in Ohope, VF was virtually unusable (much slower than dialup) except at unearthly hours when demand was low. Telecom was OK, and 2Degress who are obviously up and running in Ohope and Whakatane now, despite no mention on their site were truly amazing. Fantastic coverage and data speed everywhere, and no roaming on VF required. I'm now stuck with 2x vodems with 28MB and 1MB used and their bundled 2GB expiring 3rd Feb and 28th Feb. I activated both before leaving Auckland in case there was an issue. Do Vodafone provide any guarantee of being "fit for purpose" for their prepaid deals, like they do with their postpaid data plans? I'm pretty annoyed about this, but I know I've only got myself to blame.
